Palacete Linneo de Paula Machado in Rio de Janeiro is an early twentieth-century French beaux-arts mansion built around 1910, designed by architect Armando Carlos da Silva Telles. Originally a wedding gift from Candido Gaffré to his bride Celina Guinle, daughter of the prominent Guinle family, the 16,000-square-foot palace sits on grounds six times its size, making it the last surviving example of aristocratic French-influenced mansion architecture in Rio de Janeiro. Designated as heritage at both state and municipal levels, the property was acquired by the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro in 2012 and transformed into Casa Firjan da Indústria Criativa, a cultural production and creative industry hub serving as a testament to Rio's architectural heritage.

Fort Copacabana is a military base and historic fortress located at the southern end of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, housing the Museu Histórico do Exército (Army Historical Museum). Built between 1908 and 1914, the fort represented the most advanced fortification in Latin America at the time of its completion, featuring two armored cupolas equipped with Krupp cannons of 305 mm and 190 mm caliber. Construction began in 1863, and the fort was completed in 1901, designed to work in conjunction with other fortifications protecting the entrance to Guanabara Bay. Equipped with advanced armaments including an armored cupola with two cannons and two fast-shooting Krupp towers added in 1894, the fortress represented modern military defensive technology of its era. While currently functioning as a military barracks and closed to public visitation, the fort commands an unparalleled view across Guanabara Bay toward Rio de Janeiro, where iconic landmarks including Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer are visible in the distance.

Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra, established in 1555 during the French invasions, became the primary defensive structure protecting Guanabara Bay throughout Brazil's colonial and imperial periods. Located in the Jurujuba district of Niterói, this imposing fortress features a constructed area of 7,153 square meters and houses the Chapel of Santa Bárbara from 1612, adorned with a semi-precious stone statue, alongside a Stone Hall with distinctive granite and lime-and-crushed-shellfish mortar. The collection includes 45 cannons spanning the 18th and 19th centuries, and the fortress remains an active military installation offering structured visitor tours of this historic monument.

Forte Duque de Caxias, also known as Forte do Leme, crowns a hilltop in Rio de Janeiro's Leme district with panoramic views spanning Copacabana and Sugarloaf Mountain. Originally constructed between 1776 and 1779 as Forte da Vigia to guard against Spanish invasions, it was renamed multiple times—Forte do Leme in 1895 and finally Forte Duque de Caxias in 1935. The restored fort now functions as a memorial showcasing exhibits on Brazil's military history, accessible via a twenty-minute walk to the summit of Morro do Leme. Forte de São Domingos de Gragoatá occupies Ponta do Gragoatá in Niterói, overlooking Guanabara Bay, and ranks as the second oldest fortress guarding the historic waterway. Originating in the late 17th century with formal construction payment authorized by Royal Charter in 1698, the fort features irregular polygonal walls adapted to rocky terrain and white-washed guard posts positioned strategically along the seaward edge. Reconstructed a century after its inauguration under the Marquês do Lavradio's direction, the fortress played a crucial role during the 1893 Armada Revolt by preventing rebel landings. Heritage-listed by IPHAN in 1938, this well-preserved fortification combines solid construction with exceptional views and period military equipment.

Forte de São Luís rises from Morro do Pico in Niterói, representing Brazil's colonial and military heritage through its robust 18th-century architecture characterized by thick stone walls, angular bastions, and vaulted chambers. Dating from 1567 but primarily constructed between 1769 and 1770 during the government of the Marquis of Lavradio, the fortification was completed in 1775 and commands sweeping views across the entirety of Guanabara Bay. The fortress, which stands seamlessly integrated into Atlantic Rainforest surroundings, houses various caliber cannons and World War II trophies brought to Brazil. After abandonment between 1831 and 1863, it was reactivated during the Christie Diplomatic Issue and remains an important historical monument.

Forte da Ponta do Leme, located at Ponta Leste in Angra dos Reis, was inaugurated on October 14, 1911, as a purpose-built coastal defense structure designed by military engineer Captain Rosalvo Mariano da Silva. Positioned at the entrance to Jacuecanga Bay near the Petrobras Terminal, the fortification consists of two circular gun emplacements connected by internal tunnels, featuring rail systems for transporting ammunition to the paired 234mm Armstrong Whitworth cannons manufactured in 1901. Originally garrisoned by artillery units from Santa Cruz and São João fortresses, the structure operated through World War I and beyond. As of July 2025, the Municipality of Angra dos Reis established the Municipal Park Forte do Leme to preserve this historic monument while promoting ecotourism and environmental education.

Fortaleza de São João, located in the Urca neighborhood overlooking Guanabara Bay, stands as a 16th-century star fort erected by Estácio de Sá in 1565 to protect Rio de Janeiro from French colonial incursions. The fortress occupies a strategic position between the hills of Cara de Cão and Pão de Açúcar, marking the historic site where the city of Rio de Janeiro was founded. It comprises three smaller redoubts (batteries) and the main Forte São José, completed in 1578 and recognized as the third oldest fort in Brazil. The compound demonstrates sophisticated military engineering adapted to its coastal terrain. Today it functions as the headquarters of the Army's Physical Capacity Training Center and welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday, requiring 48 hours advance scheduling for guided tours.
