Forte Imbuí

Forte Dom Pedro II de Imbuí is a 19th-century fortress located on the Imbuí peninsula at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in the Jurujuba neighborhood of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro state. Construction began in 1863, and the fort was completed in 1901, designed to work in conjunction with other fortifications protecting the entrance to Guanabara Bay. Equipped with advanced armaments including an armored cupola with two cannons and two fast-shooting Krupp towers added in 1894, the fortress represented modern military defensive technology of its era. While currently functioning as a military barracks and closed to public visitation, the fort commands an unparalleled view across Guanabara Bay toward Rio de Janeiro, where iconic landmarks including Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer are visible in the distance.
