Forte de São Domingos de Gragoatá occupies Ponta do Gragoatá in Niterói, overlooking Guanabara Bay, and ranks as the second oldest fortress guarding the historic waterway. Originating in the late 17th century with formal construction payment authorized by Royal Charter in 1698, the fort features irregular polygonal walls adapted to rocky terrain and white-washed guard posts positioned strategically along the seaward edge. Reconstructed a century after its inauguration under the Marquês do Lavradio's direction, the fortress played a crucial role during the 1893 Armada Revolt by preventing rebel landings. Heritage-listed by IPHAN in 1938, this well-preserved fortification combines solid construction with exceptional views and period military equipment.
