Maen Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort or cliff castle located close to Land's End in Cornwall, dating back over 2,500 years to approximately 500 BC. The site features a stone rampart, ditch and counterscarp bank built across a headland neck with nearly sheer cliffs on two sides, representing one of only two fortified sites in Cornwall where Early Iron Age pottery has been found. Excavations in the late 1930s and 1940s uncovered approximately 300 pottery sherds spanning 400 BC to 400 AD, and the site underwent partial restoration in the 1990s to highlight the stone entrance and defensive structures. Now managed by the National Trust and situated near Sennen harbour, Maen Castle stands as the westernmost of all fortified sites in mainland England.

Polruan Castle, also known as the Polruan Blockhouse, is a medieval artillery fortification built around 1380 to protect the mouth of the River Fowey in Cornwall. Constructed following a French raid on Fowey in 1457 during the reign of Edward IV, the blockhouse worked in tandem with Fowey Blockhouse on the opposite riverbank with a heavy chain stretched between them to control harbour access. The walls are 6 feet thick, and the chain was last deployed in 1666, making it one of only five surviving chain towers in England and the oldest of its kind. Protected as a scheduled monument and Grade II* listed building, it is owned by the Polruan Town Trust and remains open to visitors today.

Tregantle Fort in south-east Cornwall is one of several Palmerston forts built around Plymouth to deter French invasion threats. Completed in 1865 with barracks for 1,000 personnel and provisions for 35 large guns, Tregantle served as the strategic lynchpin of the Western Lines fortification chain. Originally used for infantry training from 1903, the fort was reopened during World War II to accommodate American troops preparing for D-Day operations. Today designated as both a Scheduled Monument and Grade II Listed Building, Tregantle continues its military service, hosting Royal Marine training and specialized Royal Naval electronic warfare teams monitoring maritime communications.
