Castell de Vilanova de la Muga, now known as 'mas de les Torres,' rises from the wetlands of the Empordà alongside the Muga river. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries by the Trilla family, this fortified estate was significantly reformed in the 18th century by the Marquis of Alfarràs, who gave it its current refined appearance. The castle retains a substantial four-story rectangular tower with a ground floor, originally crenellated and now crowned with a protective roof. Despite centuries of ownership changes, the structure demonstrates the evolution of defensive architecture into noble residential design, with surrounding 14th-century walls that once protected the village from invasion.
