CASTLES CORK

Kilbrittain Castle is recognized as the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland, originally built in 1035 by Cian, grandson of the high king Brian Boru. Located in West Cork near Kinsale, the castle features a distinctive circular tower built by the MacCarty Riabhach in the fifteenth century. After partial destruction in 1920, it was extensively restored in 1969, and now serves as a private residence. The castle showcases period features including a murder hole and a large round-roofed room where guards and Irish Wolfhounds were once housed and trained.

Kilbolane Castle crowns Kilbolane Hill near the village of Milford in County Cork, representing a blend of fifteenth to sixteenth-century construction with thirteenth-century Norman design elements. The fortification originally featured high walls joined by circular guard towers and a surrounding moat, employing architectural principles similar to nearby Liscarroll and Ballincollig castles. Damaged by Cromwell's forces in 1642, only two towers remain standing today. The ruins are accessible from the roadside though the castle itself is not open to public entry.

Barmeath Castle in County Louth is a fifteenth-century tower house that later evolved into an impressive neo-Norman country house under transformation by the first Lord Bellew in the 1830s. The ancestral seat of the Barons Bellew since 1670, the castle features eighteenth-century formal additions and distinctive crenellated architecture with fat corner turrets designed by Hertfordshire architect Thomas Smith. The estate encompasses 10 acres of gardens designed by landscape architect Thomas Wright in the eighteenth century. The walled garden has been recently restored and is now open to the public.

Carrigrenan Tower is a 19th-century ornamental folly tower located on Lough Mahon shore on Little Island in Cork Harbour. Constructed as part of the grounds of the former Carrigrenan House, the tower served as a lookout or ornamental structure for the estate owners. The main house has since been demolished to make way for a modern waste water treatment plant, leaving the charming tower as a solitary reminder of the estate's former grandeur on the picturesque harbor landscape.

Dunboy Castle is a ruined 15th-century fortress on the Beara Peninsula near Castletownbere in southwest Cork, originally built by the O'Sullivan Bere clan to guard Berehaven harbour and control the lucrative sea fisheries. The castle gained historical prominence during the Siege of Dunboy in 1602, when English forces under Sir George Carew bombarded it for ten days, destroying the stronghold and marking the end of the O'Sullivan Bere's power. Though reduced to ruins, the castle remains accessible to visitors as an important monument to Gaelic resistance during the Nine Years' War.

Brow Head Signal Tower stands on the southernmost point of mainland Ireland near Barleycove in County Cork. Built in 1804 as part of a defensive network during the Napoleonic Wars, the tower was one of 81 signal towers constructed around Ireland's coast to detect and warn of French invasion using flags and balls on a mast. Located strategically on high, exposed terrain with inter-visibility with neighboring towers, Brow Head also features a Marconi Telegraph Station and remnants of 19th-century copper mines, making it a significant site of both military and industrial heritage.

Elizabeth Fort is an early 17th-century star-shaped fortification overlooking Cork City, constructed in 1601 by Sir George Carew. Originally built to control the medieval city below, the fort was damaged and rebuilt in its distinctive star shape between 1624 and 1626, becoming one of Cork's most recognizable landmarks. Its elevated position on a commanding hillside offers panoramic views across Cork and the surrounding landscape. Today freely accessible to the public, the fort's sturdy stone walls have been open to visitors since 2014, with guided tours available for those seeking deeper historical context.

Ballincollig Castle is a Norman fortification positioned on a rocky limestone outcrop south of Ballincollig town in County Cork, dating to at least the fifteenth century. The castle comprises a curtain wall encircling the rock face with a central slender keep tower. Originally acquired by the Barretts in 1458, it served as their principal stronghold until the early seventeenth century. After capture by Cromwell's forces in 1644 and subsequent disuse following 1690, the keep was restored by the Wyse family in 1857. Today the private structure remains viewable from the roadside.
