CASTLES RASTENFELD

Ottenstein Castle rises impressively above the Ottenstein Reservoir in the scenic Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, its origins tracing to the 12th century. First documented mention of the Ottenstein family appears in 1177, with the castle likely predating written records. The fortress endured two failed sieges during the Thirty Years' War in 1622 and 1640, testament to its strong fortifications. Among its most treasured features is a Romanesque castle chapel featuring vaulted ceilings adorned with monumental frescoes dating to approximately 1170, representing exceptional medieval religious artistry. The castle now operates as both a hotel and restaurant, serving as a cultural venue for antique fairs, art exhibitions, and special events. Ottenstein Castle crowns the northern shore of the Ottenstein Kamp reservoir, a remarkably preserved medieval fortress originally built in the 12th century. Burgruine Lichtenfels occupies a picturesque position in the middle of the Ottenstein reservoir near Rastenfeld in the Waldviertel, appearing particularly striking from the bridge spanning the water. Built in the 12th century by the Rauheneck family, the fortress changed ownership multiple times until 18th-century abandonment. The site remained a ruin on a wooded promontory until flooding created the reservoir, transforming the castle into a scenic peninsula landmark. Since 2000, the Burgruine Lichtenfels association has scientifically conserved the ruins, allowing visitors to explore the remnants while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
