Burgruine Lichtenfels occupies a picturesque position in the middle of the Ottenstein reservoir near Rastenfeld in the Waldviertel, appearing particularly striking from the bridge spanning the water. Built in the 12th century by the Rauheneck family, the fortress changed ownership multiple times until 18th-century abandonment. The site remained a ruin on a wooded promontory until flooding created the reservoir, transforming the castle into a scenic peninsula landmark. Since 2000, the Burgruine Lichtenfels association has scientifically conserved the ruins, allowing visitors to explore the remnants while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
