CASTLES HAINBURG AN DER DONAU

Heimenburg ruins crown the 291-metre Schlossberg hill in Hainburg an der Donau, Lower Austria, offering panoramic views of the town, Danube-Auen National Park, and Slovakia. This medieval fortress, first documented in 1040 and substantially developed from 1050, comprises a castle gate, courtyard, St. Pancras Chapel, palace and residential tower. The site served as a royal Babenberg residence in the 13th century, notably hosting the marriage of legendary Bohemian King Ottokar II and Babenberg princess Margarete. Though damaged by Ottoman sieges in 1529 and 1683 and abandoned as a residence from 1547, the castle remains freely accessible today as a historically significant landmark along the Danube.

Ruine Röthelstein occupies a striking 30-metre rocky outcrop on the Danube east of Hainburg an der Donau, directly facing Ruine Theben across the river in Slovakia. Built around 1160 and first documented in 1180, this fortress secured the Austrian Danube for centuries while its Slovak counterpart protected Hungarian and Slovak interests. The castle was dismantled in 1693-1694, with stones repurposed for Pressburg Castle expansion. A 2005 restoration project led by the Danube Auen National Park, Hainburg city, and Austrian heritage authorities exposed and stabilized the remaining wall sections, revealing this strategic medieval stronghold on the Danube.
