CASTLES KINROSS

Lochleven Castle sits on an island in Loch Leven near Kinross, Scotland, accessible by boat following the same route taken by Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots. The fortress's tower house, constructed in the 1300s, ranks among Scotland's oldest structures and gained prominence when Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567, where she was pressured to abdicate in favor of her son, James VI. The island fortress features multiple structures including the historic tower house and Glassin Tower, a charming circular residence built in the 1500s. Wooded walking paths wind through the grounds, offering peaceful surroundings with seasonal wildflower blooms and views across the loch throughout the year.

Burleigh Castle near Milnathort in Fife is a delightful Jacobean tower house that adapted an earlier medieval stronghold into its distinctive form. The structure comprises a three-storey primary tower with a striking corner tower that is round at its base and corbelled out at the rectangular top floor, representing exemplary Jacobean design. Stone construction likely began in the late 1400s to early 1500s, with significant expansion and adaptation during the late 1500s that created the present elegant form. The Balfour family owned the property until 1716 when they lost possession of both the land and castle. Today managed by Historic Environment Scotland, Burleigh Castle remains standing as a testament to centuries of Scottish architectural evolution, blending medieval military necessity with Renaissance aesthetic refinement.
