CASTLES KILMARNOCK

Caprington Castle is a 15th-century fortress located near Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland, incorporating a defensive keep within a later castellated mansion. The castle occupies the site of an ancient Wallace family stronghold dating to 1385 and later passed to the Cunninghams through marriage. Sir William Cuninghame extensively rebuilt and remodeled the castle around 1820, creating the impressive battlemented mansion that survives today, blending medieval stonework with Georgian architectural features. This private residence remains an important example of Scottish castle evolution, demonstrating how medieval fortifications were repurposed and enhanced during the 19th century.

Dundonald Castle is a splendid medieval tower house crowning a prominent hilltop in Dundonald village, commanding fine views over the Firth of Clyde between Kilmarnock and Troon in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Built in 1371 by King Robert II to mark his succession to the throne, the castle represents the birthplace of the Stewart Dynasty. The structure features a fine barrel-vaulted ceiling in the lower hall and was built on the site of earlier fortifications of the High Stewards of Scotland. King Robert II died here in 1390. Today, managed as a historic site with a visitor centre, exhibition displays, and cafeteria, Dundonald Castle provides educational and cultural activities seven days a week, showcasing archaeological finds and the significance of the Stewart succession.

Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, stands as one of the region's top free visitor attractions, formerly serving as the home of the Boyd family for over 400 years. Originally called Kilmarnock Castle and renamed to reflect its wooded valley setting, the castle was reduced to ruins by a devastating 1735 fire before undergoing extensive restoration by the 8th Lord Howard de Walden, completing the Keep by 1908 and Palace by 1930. The venue houses nationally significant collections including 15th–16th century European arms and armour, 16th-century Brussels tapestries, and rare musical instruments dating to 1570, while visitors can explore multiple chambers including the Keep, Great Hall, Solar, and Banqueting Hall.

Craigie Castle comprises ruins situated approximately four miles southeast of Kilmarnock in South Ayrshire, Scotland. This 13th-century groin-vaulted hall house represents one of the earliest buildings in the county, later remodelled in the 15th century into a tower house with surrounding outbuildings. Originally built for the Lyndesay or Lindsay clan, Craigie Castle passed around 1371 to John Wallace of Riccarton through marriage, becoming home to this prominent line of Ayrshire Wallaces until they relocated to Newton Castle in Ayr in 1588. The very ruined remains stand on a grassy knoll surrounded by remnants of a defensive ditch. Though not actively open for formal tours, the castle's impressive stone structure remains viewable from the outside, offering insight into medieval Ayrshire fortifications and clan history.
