CASTLES ISLE OF SKYE

Dunscaith Castle, known as the "Fortress of Shadows," is a dramatic ruined coastal fortress on the Isle of Skye originating in the 1300s as a Viking stronghold established by Gilbert MacAskill. Situated on a tidal island separated from mainland by a narrow channel once spanned by a drawbridge, the castle's architecture retains evidence of its defensive past including pivot holes in the rock. Control of Dunscaith shifted repeatedly among the MacAskills, MacDonalds, and MacLeods before its abandonment in the seventeenth century. The castle holds prominence in Scottish legend as the mythical home of the warrior-witch Scáthach, who instructed the hero Cuchulainn in warfare, making it culturally significant in both historical and mythological contexts of Highland Scotland.

Caisteal Ùisdein, known as Hugh's Castle, is a dramatic 16th-century tower house perched on a cliff overlooking Loch Snizort Beag on the Isle of Skye's Trotternish Peninsula. Built by Hugh MacDonald, a cousin who sought to challenge his uncle's authority, the castle later became central to a notorious historical incident involving a fatal mix-up of correspondence that exposed an assassination plot, resulting in Hugh's imprisonment in Duntulm Castle. The castle's remaining walls rise to approximately 20 feet high, offering glimpses into Scotland's turbulent clan history and the complex politics of the MacDonald dynasty. Located in a remote setting, it remains accessible to visitors seeking to explore Skye's atmospheric historical sites and dramatic landscapes.

Dun Ringill is an ancient Iron Age hill fort on the Strathaird peninsula of the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Dating to approximately the first century CE, this broch was further fortified during the Middle Ages and served for centuries as the seat of Clan MacKinnon before the clan relocated in the 16th century. The ruins today stand approximately 4 meters high with 16-meter sides, surrounded by an outer ditch and overlooking Loch Slapin. A notable feature is the nearly intact passageway entrance, which visitors can navigate to access the summit offering panoramic sea views. Stone and earth ramps on either side historically provided access to the water for shipping and trade.
