CASTLES GALSTON

Barr Castle, known locally as Lockhart Tower, is a substantial fifteenth-century tower fortress built between 1400 and 1542 on a prominent rock in the center of Galston, Ayrshire. The five-story tower with thick stone walls measuring approximately forty-eight feet by thirty-five feet was constructed by the Lockhart family, an ancient Scottish lineage first recorded in 1297. Over the centuries following the Lockharts' departure in 1670, the castle served multiple functions including jail, hospital, wool store, and church, reflecting its important place in the community. Today it stands as a tangible reminder of late medieval Scottish military architecture and the enduring heritage of a prominent Scottish family.

Loudoun Castle stands as a remarkable ruin near Galston in East Ayrshire, famously nicknamed the 'Windsor of Scotland' for its grand architectural ambitions. Constructed between 1804 and 1811 around earlier 15th and 17th-century structures, the castle was designed by architect Archibald Elliot and boasted over 90 apartments dominated by a massive main tower. Built as the seat of the Mure-Campbell family and later the Rawdon-Hastings family through marriage, the castle was tragically destroyed by fire in 1942 and never rebuilt. The grounds were subsequently transformed into a theme park that operated from 1995 to 2010, and today the atmospheric ruins stand among parkland, offering glimpses of the scale and ambition of this once-magnificent estate.
