CASTLES EAST LOTHIAN

Fenton Tower is a magnificently restored 16th-century fortified tower located 18 miles east of Edinburgh near North Berwick in East Lothian, dated 1587 though possibly built upon earlier 11th-century stronghold foundations. King James VI sought refuge here while fleeing rebel forces, and the tower endured sacking by Oliver Cromwell before falling into decay. Meticulously restored and opened in 2002, it now provides five-star accommodation for up to 13 guests, combining state-of-the-art modern facilities with intimate private home comfort and dedicated in-house staff. Set among rolling countryside surrounded by world-famous golf courses including Muirfield and North Berwick, the tower offers a unique base for golfing experiences and large-scale events including weddings.

Hailes Castle is one of Scotland's oldest stone castles, dating from the early 1200s in a pretty valley of the River Tyne near East Linton in East Lothian. Originally built by the de Gourlay family, the castle passed to the Hepburn family in the mid-1300s and became associated with notable historical figures including James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who may have been born here. Mary Queen of Scots and Bothwell stayed at the castle en route to their 1567 wedding in Edinburgh. The surviving structure includes 13th-century enclosure walls, pit prisons, a 14th-century tower, and 15th-16th-century domestic buildings, managed by Historic Environment Scotland and open year-round.

Yester Castle is a ruined fortress located near Gifford in East Lothian, Scotland, dating from before 1267 when it was built by Sir Hugo de Giffard. The castle is renowned for its legendary Goblin Ha', a substantial subterranean cavern whose construction is attributed in local lore to magical artifice. The site features the remnants of stone towers and a fabulous arch slowly being reclaimed by nature, and is a scheduled ancient monument. The castle's history is steeped in tales of its founder, known as 'The Wizard of Yester', whose supposed pact with the Devil allegedly raised a magical army of hobgoblins to construct the fortress.

Barnes Castle in East Lothian is an unfinished late-16th-century fortress on the slope of the Garleton Hills near Haddington, designed on an unusual axial plan. Built by Sir John Seton of Barnes, diplomat and court treasurer under James VI, the quadrangular castle features corner towers and intermediate defensive towers equipped with gun loops. An earlier castle occupied the site, destroyed in 1544 by English forces during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The remains, also known as Barney Vaults or The Vaults, are protected as a scheduled monument and reflect ambitious Renaissance military architecture interrupted by historical turbulence.
