CASTLES DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

Morton Castle stands in a splendid location on a headland overlooking Morton Loch in the hills above Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway. Built in the mid-15th century by the Earls of Morton on a triangular spur of land surrounded by steep drops, it is one of the most complex surviving hall-houses. The castle features a rectangular layout with a southwest gatehouse and circular tower at the southeast corner, accessible via an easy 6 km hiking trail through Morton Wood. Perched above an artificial loch with dramatic natural surroundings, the castle exemplifies medieval architectural sophistication and offers visitors year-round free access to explore its historic remains.

Kenmure Castle is a ruinous mansion near New Galloway in Dumfriesshire at the northern tip of Loch Ken, featuring a 16th-century tower house of three storeys and an attic with later 18th and 19th-century additions. The Gordon family held the castle from 1297 and may have been associated with its original medieval occupation by the Lords of Galloway. Mary, Queen of Scots was entertained here in 1568, after which the castle was torched; it was subsequently burned by Cromwell in 1650 following the family's support of Charles I. Now a scheduled ancient monument with Historic Environment Scotland, the derelict castle preserves layers of Scottish history from the medieval period through the 17th century.

Knockbrex Castle, also known as the Toy Fort, is a folly-turned-holiday destination near Gatehouse of Fleet in the Carrick area of Dumfries and Galloway. Originally built as an ornamental structure and motor house by James Brown, a wealthy Manchester cloth merchant, the estate buildings were constructed between 1895 and 1920. Rescued from disrepair during the early 1990s, the castle was subsequently developed into a holiday rental property and now operates as a self-catering accommodation. The estate combines architectural whimsy with practical heritage restoration, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Victorian-era estate building and early 20th-century transformation.
