Bristol Castle, established in the late 11th century under William the Conqueror's orders, was completed between 1086 and 1088 as a Norman fortress on the north bank of the River Avon. The castle became one of England's largest Norman keeps and served as an important royal stronghold, witnessing numerous historical events including notable imprisonments and executions across the 12th and 13th centuries. Neglected by the 16th century, the castle was demolished in 1656 under Oliver Cromwell's orders. Today, visitors to Castle Park near Broadmead can discover fragments of this once-magnificent fortress, including the historic sally port, offering glimpses into Bristol's medieval past and Norman architectural heritage.
