Crawford Castle stands substantially in ruins on the north bank of the River Clyde near Crawford in South Lanarkshire, strategically positioned to guard the Mennock Pass between England and the upper Clyde Valley. Documented in existence by 1175, the castle served as the administrative centre for the Barony of Crawford, one of southern Scotland's largest and most influential baronies of its time. Also known as Lindsay Tower after its former owners, the castle occupies a site of significant archaeological interest, where Roman fort remains dating to 80–170 AD have been discovered. The site offers open, informal access on private farmland with no entrance fees or formal restrictions.
