Castle Zuheros crowns a dramatic limestone crag in the village of Zuheros in Córdoba's Subbética region, with origins tracing to the 9th century when the Banu Himsi fortified it as a stronghold against the Emirate of Córdoba. For 250 years (1240-1492), this fortress marked the volatile frontier with the Kingdom of Granada. A Renaissance palace built by the House of Córdoba was added in the 14th century, its remains still visible within the fortifications. Uniquely, the castle's walls rise directly from living rock without artificial foundations. An 18th-century conversion of the keep into a Clock Tower was reversed during 1960 restoration to restore its medieval appearance, while an adjacent Archaeological Museum enriches visits with regional context.
