Castillo San Esteban rises on a steep 820-meter hill in Santisteban del Puerto, located at El Condado region near the Albacete provincial border. Built upon an ancient Iberian settlement and Visigothic defenses, the fortress played a significant role during Islamic occupation, hosting the Banu Habil brothers' rebellion against Abd-el-Rahman before falling to Cordobese forces in 914 and 924. Following Ferdinand III's acquisition in 1226 and subsequent royal grants, Santisteban evolved from fortress to villa through the centuries. Little remains of the original structure today, though the site retains its historical significance and offers free public access.
