CASTLES PROVINCIA DE BURGOS

Palacio de los Medina Rosales is a Renaissance palace constructed in the second half of the 16th century by Juan Vallejo in Cadiñanos, in the Merindades region of Burgos. The colossal structure consists of two towers united by a central body adorned with elaborate Plateresque architectural details. Originally featuring towers at each corner with square floor plans, the palace today survives in a ruined state with one complete tower and portions of another remaining along with fragments of the decorated facade. Designated as a Cultural Property of Interest (BIC) in 1991, it exemplifies 16th-century noble architecture despite its current lamentable preservation.

Torre de Villanueva de Mena is a rectangular aristocratic tower located in Valle de Mena, Burgos, built with porous stone masonry measuring approximately ten by eleven meters. The structure features an eastern entrance with a rounded arch and coat of arms, supplemented by multiple square windows, arrow slits, and a defensive balcony. The south facade displays three windows of varying architectural styles, including an ogival arch and rounded apertures. corbels supporting a wooden platform top suggest additional upper-level defenses. This palace-tower exemplifies the fortified residences built by local nobility in the Merindades region during the late medieval period.

Castillo de Arganzón rises dramatically over a rocky promontory above the Zadorra River gorge in Burgos province, part of the historic Condado de Treviño region. This medieval fortress belonged to the influential Velasco family during its height. Surrounded by dense oak forest and set in a natural, wild landscape, the castle occupies a nearly inaccessible position with an irregular plan adapted to the bedrock foundation. Today, visitors can reach the remains via hiking paths that traverse the woodland, discovering the Torre de los Moros—a 17-meter square tower with ashlar walls—along with traces of the original moat and cistern, offering a tangible connection to medieval frontier defense.

Castillo de Coruña del Conde originated in the 10th century when García I of León initiated the repopulation of the Duero valley, situated strategically near the ancient Roman city of Clunia to control key corridors and passages into Castilla. The fortress displays evidence of intense medieval conflict, including works by Almanzor featuring a distinctive Caliphal arch, revealing its contested status between Christian and Muslim powers. Though substantially repaired in the mid-17th century, the castle now stands completely in ruins, its stone progressively dismantled for rural constructions. The remaining structure reveals an elongated body defended by a barbican, reinforcing towers, a deep moat, and hollow cubes with arrow slits.

The Torre de Loja in Quintana de Valdivielso, Burgos province, represents 15th-century Castilian fortification architecture, later transformed in the 16th century. This hilltop tower, positioned 250 meters from the town, anchors a complex including a chapel, domestic structures, and defensive barriers arranged in an L-shape around a courtyard. The keep displays heraldic decoration and distinctive crenellations with corner towers supported by corbels, standing as testimony to the Saravia de Rueda family's power in the region and designated as a Cultural Heritage Site.

Castle of Lara de los Infantes is a historic fortress founded around 902 by Gonzalo and Finderico, perched atop the Picón de Lara in the Sierra de la Demanda in Burgos, Castile and León. The castle is particularly significant as the birthplace of Fernán González, Castile's first independent count and a pivotal figure in Spanish history. At its height, the fortress featured seven towers, four floors, and an outer wall, though only fragmentary remains of the keep walls survive today. The ruins command extraordinary panoramic views across the rolling foothills and Arlanza Valley, and the site remains one of the five castles featured in Burgos's coat of arms, accessible via several hiking routes from the village below.
