Castell Medieval de Planes sits majestically on the highest point of the municipality, constructed in the 12th century by the Almohads. This fortified settlement features a distinctive polygonal elongated enclosure with eight rectangular towers in salient and crenellated walls, preserved in excellent condition up to the height of the crenellations. The castle includes a remarkable large cistern measuring 10 by 4 meters, covered by a barrel vault, demonstrating the engineering sophistication of medieval military architecture. Strategically positioned in the Comtat region of Alicante, the fortress monitored traffic along the river Serpis and provided defense for the local population during the 12th through 18th centuries, with phases of significant occupation in the 14th-15th and 16th-18th centuries.
