CASTLES MONTEAGUDO DE LAS VICARÍAS

Castillo de Monteagudo de las Vicarias represents a Gothic Renaissance fortress built by the prominent Hurtado de Mendoza family during the 15th and 16th centuries in Soria's Tierra de Medinaceli region. Its pentagonal form perfectly adapts to the hillside where the fortified village stands, with towers of varied shapes at its angles, notably a distinctive circular tower that appears octagonal at its base. Located on the frontier between the medieval kingdoms of Aragón and Castilla, the castle held strategic importance for centuries in border control and governance. Since its legal protection in 1949 and the village's designation as one of Spain's Most Beautiful Villages in 2019, this well-preserved structure has become a valued heritage site reflecting centuries of medieval border politics and architectural achievement.

Castillo de la Raya, also known as the Martín González tower, perches on a hilltop marking the historic border between the medieval kingdoms of Castile and Aragón near Monteagudo de las Vicarias in Soria province. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries by King Alfonso VIII as an advance garrison to monitor the Nágima valley and the crucial Jalón River passage, it remains an important landmark in the region's defensive landscape. Constructed with masonry walls and ashlar stone corners in Gothic and Proto-Gothic styles, the fortress originally contained multiple rooms, a cistern, and underground passages adapted to its dramatic hilltop setting near the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Torre. Though currently in progressive ruin, its strategic location between spectacular rocky formations and its role in the Reconquista continue to make it a significant monument to medieval military architecture.

Castillo de Monteagudo de las Vicarias is a distinctive fortress standing in southeastern Soria within the Tierra de Medinaceli region, positioned along la Raya, the medieval frontier between Aragón and Castile.
