Castillo de Monteagudo de las Vicarias

Castillo de Monteagudo de las Vicarias is a distinctive fortress standing in southeastern Soria within the Tierra de Medinaceli region, positioned along la Raya, the medieval frontier between Aragón and Castile. Constructed during the late Medieval period using ashlar masonry, the castle displays a notable pentagonal floor plan with towers of varying designs including circular, rectangular, and uniquely one tower with octagonal exterior and hexagonal interior. The fortification features a protected gateway with machicoulis and a complete defensive circuit with patrol walkway and crenellations. Notably, the interior preserves a Renaissance-style courtyard with two gallery wings featuring columns with smooth and fluted shafts topped by Ionic capitals. Adjacent to the castle stands the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Muela displaying mudéjar architectural influence. The fortress bears the heraldic emblem of the powerful Hurtado de Mendoza family, regional lords who controlled much of Soria's medieval fortifications and palaces.
