Castillo de Espadilla rises dramatically atop Peña Saganta, a mountain reaching 723 meters in the Alto Mijares region of Castellón province. This Islamic-origin fortress strategically dominated the Mijares River valley and served as a critical defensive stronghold. Muslim king Abú Zayd ceded the castle to the archbishop of Tarragona after converting to Christianity, and it subsequently passed through the barony of Arenós to the ducal house of Gandia. King Juan II confiscated it in 1462 and granted it to his son Alfonso in 1471, establishing the Duchy of Villahermosa. Though in poor condition, the castle's main tower and surrounding wall remnants remain visible, and it is recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site.
