CASTLES CULLERA

Castell i muralles de Cullera represents significant Muslim military architecture from the 10th century Caliphate period, situated on Serra de les Raboses approximately 200 meters above the town, commanding panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast and the Júcar River mouth. Originally part of the Taifa of Valencia's defenses during the 11th century, the complex was fully developed by the 14th century with a fortified enclosure called the albacar vell containing the main castle with flanking towers and a 10-meter central tower. The strategic position controlled coastal trade routes and the fertile La Ribera Baixa agricultural plain. Since 1997, the castle has housed the Municipal Museum of History and Archaeology of Cullera, preserving the region's rich medieval heritage and Islamic architectural traditions.

Fuerte Carlista de Cullera is a 19th-century fortification built during the First Carlist War (1836–1839) as part of Cullera's defensive framework, constructed by Isabelino forces on the municipality's highest promontory. The rectangular stone and brick structure features quadrangular enclosures with semicircular towers and numerous gun ports designed to confront Carlist threats with rifle and artillery fire. From the fort's elevated position, visitors can view panoramas of Cullera's north and south coasts, the old city, surrounding farmlands with rice fields and orange groves, and distant towns of Sueca and Favara. Today the ruins provide a tangible connection to the regional conflicts that shaped 19th-century Spanish history.
