Castillo de Chera stands on a strategic hill one kilometer from the town of Chera in Los Serranos district, Valencia province. Built by the Almorávides in the 12th century, this fortress controlled the surrounding plain, the Tormagal gorge, and the important route from Requena to Chulilla. The castle features a distinctive rectangular floor plan with high walls, corner towers, and a central tower of homage—representing the sole example in Spain of a rectangular fortress with square corner towers built by Hispano-Muslim architects. Following medieval conflicts between Castile and Aragón, including assaults during the War of the Two Pedros, the fortress remains in progressive ruin.
