CASTLES CARDONA

Castell de Cardona ranks as arguably Catalonia's most significant medieval fortress, constructed by Wilfred the Hairy in 886 atop a hill overlooking the Cardener River valley. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, it served as the residence of the powerful Lords of Cardona, whose family rose to prominence within the Crown of Aragon, earning the title "kings without crowns" due to their vast territories and dynastic connections across Europe. The castle showcases both Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with the distinctive torre de la minyona—an 11th-century tower measuring 15 meters high and 10 meters in diameter—as its architectural centerpiece.
