CASTLES CADIZ

Murallas de San Carlos is an 18th-century maritime fortress constructed in Cádiz to defend against naval attacks, completed in 1784 by military engineer Antonio Hurtado. This semi-bastion complex features 90 artillery pieces and an innovative interior structure of 55 vaults adapted for various purposes, including storage for snow brought from the mountains. Located by the sea adjacent to Plaza España, the murallas offer commanding Atlantic Ocean views particularly stunning at sunset. The robust walls and majestic watchtowers exemplify late-18th-century military engineering design, integrating both defensive capability and practical supply management within its impressive masonry architecture.

Torre de Torregorda is a historic coastal defense tower situated between Cádiz and San Fernando in the province of Cádiz. Originally constructed in the 17th century, possibly over earlier Hercules tower foundations, it served as a critical node in the Mediterranean coast's early warning network, maintaining visual contact with watchtowers at Sancti Petri, Torre Alta, and San Sebastián. During the 18th century, a military battery was built around the tower, and in the 19th century it housed a sophisticated optical telegraph system using engineer Francisco Hurtado's military design. Though demolished in 1898 during the Spanish-American War, the tower was rebuilt in 1932 on its original stone base and remains a significant landmark of Spain's coastal fortification heritage.
