CASTLES BIZKAIA

Muñatones gaztelua in Muskiz, Bizkaia, represents one of the Basque Country's most significant examples of medieval defensive architecture. Constructed between the 14th and 15th centuries during the region's turbulent War of the Banks, the castle evolved from a simple 13th-century defensive tower into a fortified complex. Lope García de Salazar transformed the structure in the 15th century, surrounding the main tower with protective walls and residential quarters. Its keep reaches 25 meters, the highest tower in Bizkaia, and remains the only structure in the region meriting castle classification due to its sophisticated exterior wall system. Limited public access requires advance arrangements, though the imposing architecture and medieval heritage remain evident.

Castillo de Ereñozar rises atop the hills of Ereño, Bizkaia, strategically positioned near the coast to survey sea approaches and marshland entries into the region. Active from the 11th to 13th centuries, the castle represented a key element in feudalism's establishment and the region's political restructuring. Archaeological evidence indicates aristocratic occupation around the year 1000, with the fortress playing a fundamental role in feudal landscape development. Today, the castle's remains have transformed into the hermitage of San Miguel de Ereñozar, visible across the Gernika estuary and serving as a perfect defensive vantage point from its medieval period of constant warfare and conquest. Both the castle and adjacent 13th-16th century parish necropolis reveal evidence of sustained occupation and community organization in this strategically important Basque location.

Castillo de Balmaseda is a 13th-century fortress perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the medieval town of Balmaseda in Bizkaia, Spain. This strategically important castle controlled the passage of commerce between Castile and the Basque coast, forming part of an integrated defensive system that included a central tower with walls descending the hillside slopes. Originally in use from the 14th to the mid-16th century, the castle saw renewed significance during the 19th-century Carlist Wars. Though largely in ruins and overgrown with vegetation, the site retains considerable historical and cultural value as a testament to the region's medieval past.
