CASTLES ARBECA

Castell d'Arbeca in Les Garrigues, Lleida, represents the medieval power of a territory that flourished during the 15th and 16th centuries under the ownership of the mighty Cardona family. Dating from the 12th to 15th centuries, this Gothic-Renaissance palace-castle once featured four towers—the Tower of Arms, Tower of the Porgador (with three cannons), Tower of the Winds, and Tower of the Ladies—reflecting its strategic importance. Today, visitors encounter the base of two large circular corner towers, sections of sloped wall, and portions of the fortified perimeter, with a viewpoint offering panoramic views across the plain of Urgell toward the Montsec mountains, illustrating the castle's commanding position.

Fortalesa dels Vilars is an extraordinary Iron Age fortress located near Arbeca in Catalonia, inhabited continuously for 400 years from the 8th to 4th century BC. The Iberian settlement features a distinctive oval defensive system with walls five meters thick and equally high, reinforced by fourteen semicircular towers accessible through only two small gates. Sophisticated water management including a central well-cistern ensured access to fresh water during siege conditions. Discovered in 1975, this archaeological marvel represents one of Europe's best-preserved protohistoric sites, with its advanced defensive engineering and strategic positioning demonstrating remarkable sophistication in ancient Iberian military architecture.
