Castillo de San Miguel in Almuñécar perches on a hilltop above the Old Town, with origins tracing to the 1st century BCE Phoenician fortifications. During Moorish occupation, the fortress was enlarged to encompass 40 towers and three gates, later enhanced in the 16th century with a defensive trench, drawbridge, and impressive entrance featuring four circular turrets. The castle now functions as a museum housing Phoenician, Roman, and medieval artifacts, including a neoclassical pavilion containing the City Museum, offering audiovisual exhibits and scenic views over Almuñécar and its surrounding landscape.
