Barntown Castle is a five-storey Norman tower house built by the Roche family during the 15th or 16th century, located approximately 5 kilometres west of Wexford town on the main Wexford-New Ross road. Originally constructed as a watchtower and storehouse for Ferrycarrig Castle, the structure is first documented in 1562 under the ownership of Walter Roche. Strategically positioned midway between Forth Mountain and the River Slaney, the castle commands excellent views over the river valley. Now in ruins amid grazing fields, the tower house remains a testament to medieval defensive architecture, having been succeeded as a residence by a Georgian mansion currently occupied by the Joyce family, with the castle itself serving as a historic monument to Wexford's Norman heritage.
