CASTLES MÉRIGNAC

Château de Bourran is an ancient chartreuse located within Bourran park in Mérignac, originally serving as a wine estate for the Minimes of Bordeaux before its sale as national property in 1791. Reconstructed in 1869 by architects Jules and Paul Laffargue, the property evolved into an educational facility, serving as a teacher training institute under the Aquitaine University system. Today it functions as a community and educational space, with its substantial park featuring a pedagogical garden and shared community gardens managed by local associations. The estate represents an important blend of historical preservation and contemporary educational use within the Mérignac area.

Château de Villars-Marange is a 15th and 17th century estate located in Mérignac, Charente, near the historic Postway connecting Paris to Bordeaux. The castle comprises a Renaissance entrance tower with triangular pediment dormers and a classical residence, reflecting its evolution across centuries. Originally held by the Villars family as vassals of the Counts of Angoulême, it later passed to noble families including the Dussaults and Charlonneries, who stewarded the property for two centuries. Listed as a historic monument since 2007, this ensemble stands as a testament to regional architectural heritage and aristocratic life in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
