CASTLES NAMUR

The Citadelle de Namur is a historic fortress transformed into a major tourist destination offering two millennia of European military and urban history. The complex features the Terra Nova Visitor Centre, 450 meters of underground passages with 3D animations, a medieval experience, the 12th-13th century Château des Comtes, artisan workshops including a working forge and perfume studio, a cable car connection to downtown, Queen Fabiola Amusement Park, dining venues, and contemporary sculpture installations. The site blends heritage preservation with recreational attractions, making it both an educational landmark and family destination.

Château de Dave is a historic manor house located in Dave, now part of Namur, Belgium, standing on the banks of the Meuse River. Originally a medieval stronghold from the 14th century serving as the seat of power for the influential sieurs de Dave, the château fell into ruin during the 17th century before being reconstructed and enlarged in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Dukes of Fernan-Nuñez, from whom it derives an alternative name. The castle features a seven-hectare English garden and distinctive riverside location. The property remains privately owned by descendants of the Dukes and is not accessible to the public.

Château de Mielmont is a grand estate built atop a rocky outcrop 140 meters above the Orneau valley near Onoz, Namur province, Belgium. First mentioned in 1125, the castle served as an important fortress defending the County of Namur's border with the Duchy of Brabant. The structure retains its 12th-century keep and fortifications, while Renaissance modifications in the 16th century and 17th-century additions transformed it into an elegant residence. Today, the château encompasses 100 hectares of parkland and operates as a luxury venue, accommodating up to 24 adults and hosting seminars, private events, and corporate celebrations.

Fort de Saint-Héribert is one of nine forts comprising the fortified position of Namur, built from 1888 to 1892 according to General Brialmont's designs. Constructed from unreinforced concrete rather than masonry—a new and experimental material for the era—the triangular fort is surrounded by ditches 6 metres deep and 8 metres wide, making it one of the largest Brialmont forts. Heavily bombarded during the August 1914 siege and again attacked in 1940, the fort has been carefully preserved. As the last remaining fort in the Namur belt accessible to visitors, it now operates as a museum preserving the stories of its defenders and wartime history.

Fort d'Emines is a late 19th-century military fortification located near Namur in Belgium, built between 1888 and 1892 as part of the Namur defensive line designed by General Henri Alexis Brialmont. Constructed entirely of unreinforced concrete—a pioneering use of this new material—the triangular fort features a deep surrounding ditch and represents an important example of late Victorian-era military architecture. Though heavily bombarded by German artillery during the 1914 Battle of Namur, the fort was converted to a supply and munitions depot rather than being upgraded for continued defensive use. Today, situated approximately 5 kilometers north of central Namur, the historic structure stands on private property as a testament to Belgium's military heritage.

Fort de Malonne is one of nine fortifications constructed between 1888 and 1892 as part of Namur's strategic defensive position, designed by General Henri Alexis Brialmont using his pioneering all-concrete construction method. Located approximately 4.5 kilometres southwest of Namur's center, this fortress underwent critical upgrades in the 1930s to strengthen Belgium's frontier defenses against German threats. The fort endured heavy German bombardment in 1914 during the Battle of Namur and saw further action in 1940 before falling to German forces. Today Fort de Malonne functions as part of a nature preserve, providing habitat for bats and other wildlife while remaining largely inaccessible to the public. The surrounding area offers scenic walking corridors through the landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate the fort's imposing structure and its role in Belgian military heritage.

Fort de Suarlée is one of nine strategic fortifications constructed under General Brialmont's orders on either side of the Meuse River to protect the Namur region of Belgium. Part of an important military defensive network built in the 19th century, this fort represents a significant chapter in Belgian military heritage and regional fortification strategies. However, unlike some regional forts such as Fort of Saint Héribert, Fort de Suarlée is not currently open to the general public for visits, limiting direct visitor access to this historic structure and its grounds.
