CASTLES BILZEN

Kasteel van Schoonbeek is a Renaissance-style water castle in Beverst (Bilzen), originally mentioned in 1361 as a fief of the counts of Loon. The U-shaped structure with a central wing and moat fed by the Demer river dates primarily to the 16th and early 17th centuries, with its oldest sections from the early 17th century. The estate passed through prominent families including the van Schoonbeckes, de Cortenbach, Preston, and van Renesse lineages, with Count Theodore de Renesse serving as mayor and provincial governor. Located in the Schoonbeek hamlet that became part of Bilzen in 1977, this fortified estate exemplifies Meuse Renaissance architecture and centuries of aristocratic stewardship in the Limburg region.

Kasteel Edelhof in Munsterbilzen is a stately manor house built in 1850 using largely salvaged 18th-century materials, including Louis XV-style window frames and rococo woodwork from demolished Munsterbilzen Abbey buildings. The castle was inhabited by successive noble families before becoming a hotel-restaurant in the 1940s. Following a comprehensive 10-year restoration completed in 2025, the castle now features a bistro and spaces for local associations. The surrounding 25-hectare park has been restored in its original English style with winding creeks, bridges, flower meadows, and recreational areas, bordered by the Munsterbos forest.
