CASTLES SALVADOR

Farol da Barra, located in Salvador, Bahia, is South America's oldest lighthouse, marking the entrance to the Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). The first lighthouse was built in 1698 with a whale oil lantern, while the current iconic 22-meter cylindrical structure with black-and-white stripes was inaugurated in 1839. Housed within the historic Santo Antônio da Barra Fort, the site now contains a comprehensive museum featuring underwater archaeological artifacts, navigation instruments, nautical signaling equipment, and vessel miniatures showcasing the geography and culture of All Saints Bay. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation while offering visitors stunning panoramic views of the bay and surrounding coastline, making it a major cultural and historical attraction.

Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, also known as Forte da Capoeira, stands in Salvador as an 18th-century fortification built to shield the city from Dutch and Spanish invasions, though it never saw battle in its intended role. Later transformed into a prison, the fort experienced profound cultural revitalization beginning in 1985 when capoeira masters and cultural groups occupied the space after displacement from Pelourinho, rallying for its restoration. Today the fort is protected by IPHAN and forms an integral part of Salvador's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre, serving as a vital cultural hub where capoeira traditions flourish within its historic walls and the fort has become a symbol of community-driven preservation.
