Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, also known as Fortaleza da Barra, dominates the entrance to Paranaguá Bay from its position on Fortaleza Beach at the foot of Morro da Fortaleza on Ilha do Mel. Built between 1767 and 1769 under orders from the Marquis of Pombal and inaugurated on March 25, 1769, this imposing stone fortification was designed to protect the colonial village's anchorage from corsairs and Spanish forces threatening valuable regional exports of gold, wood, and yerba mate. Constructed without bastions or attached defensive structures, the fortress operated until the early 19th century before gradually losing military significance. Listed by IPHAN in 1938 and later restored by state authorities, the fortress now houses a museum and forest post, welcoming visitors to experience this strategic Atlantic coastal monument.
