Fort Wadsworth is a 226-acre historic military site on the northeastern shore of Staten Island at the mouth of Upper New York Bay, now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Originally built by the British during the American Revolution, the fort's masonry structures and concrete artillery batteries protected the vital Narrows passage controlling access to the Hudson River and Manhattan. Open to the public with free admission, the site features a visitor center, campground, and stunning views of the Verrazano Bridge and Manhattan skyline. Visitors can enjoy walking tours, bird watching, kayaking, and biking through this preserved example of American coastal defense.
