Fort Gorges is a granite fortress built between 1858 and 1864 on Hog Island Ledge in Casco Bay, Portland, Maine. This D-shaped, two-story enclosed fort was constructed from locally quarried granite and features 56 gun emplacements defending Portland Harbor. Designed to counter foreign naval threats following the War of 1812, the fort never saw military action as advancing military technology rendered it obsolete before troops were stationed there. Now a historic park accessible only by boat, Fort Gorges showcases 19th-century military engineering and offers panoramic views of Portland Harbor.
