Fort Dade on Egmont Key in Pinellas County was constructed beginning in 1898 as a coastal defense fortification for the Spanish-American War era. Five artillery batteries and a complete town with railroad, school, and movie theater were developed on the island to establish a significant military presence. This late 19th-century installation represents an important example of American coastal defense strategy during the period of imperial expansion and modernization of U.S. military infrastructure.
