CASTLES NEW HAMPSHIRE

Winnekenni Castle in Haverhill, Massachusetts overlooks Kenoza Lake and sits on expansive grounds featuring trails, a basin, and round pond. Though the castle building itself is currently closed by the city due to the need for extensive rehabilitation and renovation, the property remains managed by the City of Haverhill and continues to serve as a venue for special events on its picturesque grounds. The Winnekenni Foundation has supported preservation efforts since 1968, maintaining the landmark's cultural importance to the region.

Fort Stark State Historic Site overlooks the Piscataqua River, Little Harbor, and the Atlantic Ocean from a peninsula on New Castle Island in New Hampshire. Originally fortified in 1746 as Battery Cumberland with nine cannons, the site was expanded in the early 20th century following the Spanish-American War to defend Portsmouth's harbor and nearby naval shipyard. Named for Revolutionary War officer John Stark, who distinguished himself at the Battle of Bennington, the fort housed the 22nd Coastal Artillery during World War II. The museum displays military artifacts and information about this historic unit, while the surrounding area offers walking trails, a small beach, and kayak access to coastal waters.
