Kip's Castle is a magnificent 9,000-square-foot mansion built in 1905 on the crest of First Mountain in Montclair and Verona, New Jersey, replicating a medieval Norman castle. Constructed for wealthy textile industrialist Frederic Ellsworth Kip, the estate features thirty distinguished rooms with vaulted ceilings and six ornate fireplaces, built entirely of local trap rock trimmed with sandstone. The eleven-acre estate spans both townships and commands spectacular views of New York City. Now operated as a public park by Essex County, Kip's Castle has been meticulously restored and preserved as a historical landmark and community gathering space.
