Fort Smallwood Park, located on the outer Patapsco River in Pasadena, Maryland, preserves a military garrison built between 1890 and 1910 as part of the Spanish-American War defense network. Named for Major General William Smallwood, a Revolutionary War veteran and former Maryland governor, the fort served alongside Forts Howard, Armistead, and Carroll to protect Baltimore from perceived threats. Used until 1927, it was then transferred to public ownership and became an Anne Arundel County park in 2006. Today, visitors can explore historic gun batteries and restored barracks, traverse walking trails, enjoy fishing from a 380-foot pier, and relax on beaches overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

Fort Howard Park stands on the Chesapeake Bay shore in Baltimore County, Maryland, as a testament to 19th-century American coastal defense. Built in 1901-1902 to defend Baltimore from naval attack, the fort's five artillery batteries were named for notable figures including Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star-Spangled Banner during the War of 1812. Manned by the Coast Artillery Corps through World War I until its closure in 1926, the fort played a crucial role as the "Bulldog at Baltimore's Gate." Today, visitors discover remnants of fortifications partially obscured by ivy and vegetation, along with walking trails, picnic areas, and waterfront views that blend military history with natural landscape.

Fort Carroll is a 3.4-acre artificial island fort constructed in the Patapsco River south of Baltimore, Maryland, named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Designed by Brevet-Colonel Robert E. Lee and constructed beginning in 1848 under his supervision, the hexagonal fortification was built to protect Baltimore as part of the Third System defense program. The fort's exterior consists of large granite blocks with interior spaces defined by brick masonry and concrete, featuring curved granite stairs and brick archways of remarkable engineering craftsmanship. Though never completed and never used as a military installation, Fort Carroll was officially abandoned by the Army in 1921. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the island remains an architectural testament to mid-19th-century American military engineering.

Fort Armistead is a historic military fortification located on Hawkins Point in Baltimore Harbor, constructed between 1897 and 1901 as part of the United States' coastal defense network. Named after Major George Armistead, who commanded Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, the fort served as an ammunition storage facility for the U.S. Navy during World War II and later housed anti-aircraft defenses. Today, the site functions as a public park featuring ruins and tunnels to explore, complemented by picnic areas, fishing spots, and walking trails. The park is free to visit year-round, though visitors are advised to explore during daylight hours for safety reasons.
