Fort Dade on Egmont Key in Pinellas County was constructed beginning in 1898 as a coastal defense fortification for the Spanish-American War era. Five artillery batteries and a complete town with railroad, school, and movie theater were developed on the island to establish a significant military presence. This late 19th-century installation represents an important example of American coastal defense strategy during the period of imperial expansion and modernization of U.S. military infrastructure.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States, completed by Spanish settlers in 1705 after 23 years of construction. Built from coquina, a local shell-based stone designed to absorb cannon fire, the fortress successfully repelled attacks in 1702, 1728, and 1740. Located on 20.5 acres in Saint Augustine, Florida, the fort has protected Spain's colonial settlement for centuries and remained strategically significant until 1900. Visitors can explore the historic structure, watch cannon demonstrations, and participate in living history programs and reenactments throughout the year. Admission is $15 for adults ages 16 and older.

West Martello Tower in Key West is a historic Civil War–era martello tower built in 1862 to defend the island alongside Fort Zachary Taylor. One of three surviving Civil War structures on Key West, the tower was part of a defensive strategy to protect commerce and the strategic island. Although never engaged in battle, it saw use during the Spanish-American War for quartering troops and signaling. Threatened with demolition in 1949, the tower was preserved and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Today it serves as home to the Key West Garden Club, which maintains the site as a public attraction.

Historic Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Florida represents nearly two centuries of military engineering and strategy overlooking Pensacola Bay. Built in 1787 and dramatically expanded between 1839 and 1844, the fort was reconstructed from the ruins of Spanish, French, and British fortifications that previously occupied the hill. Its impressive architecture features walls four feet thick and twenty feet high, with the hilltop fortress connected to a sea-level water battery. One of four fortifications protecting the bay and U.S. Navy Yard, Fort Barrancas served as a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War. Located within Naval Air Station Pensacola, the site underwent a comprehensive restoration project and now includes the Spanish Water Battery and Advanced Redoubt within Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park sits on the southern edge of Key West, Florida, housing the largest cache of Civil War armament in the nation. Built and completed in 1866, this National Historic Monument served as a formidable defense during the Civil War and Spanish-American War. Within its 56-acre park stands one of Key West's most popular beaches, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking. The fort contains nearly 200 Rodman, Columbiad, and Parrott cannons arranged in historic battery formations, offering visitors insight into 19th-century military engineering and American coastal defense strategy. Open to the public since 1985, it remains the southernmost state park in the continental United States.
