Fort Miley is located at Lands End in San Francisco, California, approximately six miles west of downtown at the northern tip of a scenic coastal headland. Established in 1890 and named in 1900 for Lieutenant Colonel John D. Miley, the fort was designed as a coastal defense installation with gun batteries installed in 1902 to guard the approach to San Francisco Bay. In the 1930s, much of the site was converted into the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center, built in 1934. Today, Fort Miley's remaining gun batteries and historic structures are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, offering visitors scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and outdoor exploration among the remnants of this significant military installation.
