Drochil Castle is a ruined five-story fortress in the Scottish Borders, located above the Lyne Water northwest of Peebles, begun in 1578 by James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton and Regent of Scotland. The ambitious structure remained unfinished when Douglas was executed by King James VI in 1581, subsequently abandoned by 1630 and passing to William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry in 1686, whose descendants the Dukes of Buccleuch retain ownership today. The evocative ruins now stand adjacent to Drochil Castle Farmhouse, a highly-rated bed and breakfast surrounded by breathtaking countryside and rugged landscapes, offering visitors the dramatic experience of late 16th-century Scottish Renaissance architecture within its natural setting.
