Castell y Bere is a Welsh castle ruin strung along a jagged rocky outcrop in the Dysynni Valley at the foot of Cader Idris near Tywyn. Built in 1221 by Llywelyn the Great to protect Gwynedd's southern frontier, the castle features an unusually sophisticated defended entrance with two gate-towers and drawbridges. The distinctive south tower displays the characteristic Welsh apsidal plan. Taken by Edward I in 1283, it was abandoned during an uprising in 1294 and remains an open-access heritage site.
