Tiverton Castle dominates the banks of the River Exe in Devon with over 900 years of continuous history since its construction in 1106 under Henry I's orders. The Norman fortress served as the medieval seat of the powerful Earls of Devon and witnessed high drama including the marriage of William Courtenay to Catherine Plantagenet, daughter of Edward IV, in 1495. The castle endured siege during the English Civil War when a lucky shot struck Fairfax's forces' drawbridge chain, leading to its capture and eventual dismantling. Later converted to a country house, visitors today can explore its Civil War Armoury, historic interiors, and walled gardens.
