Betchworth Castle is a mostly crumbled ruin of a fortified medieval stone house with a Scheduled monument status, situated on a sandstone spur overlooking the River Mole in Surrey east of Dorking. Dating to at least 1377 when Sir John Fitzalan received licence to crenellate his residence, the castle underwent further fortifications in 1448 and extensive 18th-century renovations by Henry Peters before being largely demolished in the 19th century. The ruins, surrounded by Betchworth Park Golf Course, showcase surviving two-storey corners and historical layers spanning over 600 years, with local legends of ghostly black dogs and spectral lords adding to the atmospheric site's mystique.
