CASTLES STEVENSTON

Kerelaw Castle is a coastal North Ayrshire fortress in Stevenston, Scotland, with ownership tracing back to circa 1191 and significant evolution through multiple Scottish noble families including the Lockharts, Campbells, and Glencairns. Destroyed during a 1488 feud between the Cunninghames and Montgomeries, the castle was subsequently rebuilt with an early 16th-century quadrangular structure featuring a central courtyard and vaulted lower floor. Three walls survive in various states of decay, adorned with Gothic windows inspired by Kilwinning Abbey on the southern facade. Converted to a garden folly for Kerelaw House around 1830, the ruins remain a distinctive example of Ayrshire's medieval defensive architecture.
